JOIN US IN CELEBRATING FAMILY DAY, Monday September 24
Family Day – A Day to Eat Meals With Your Children, is part of a national effort to promote parental engagement as a simple, effective way to reduce substance abuse by children and teens and raise healthier children.
Family Day emphasizes the importance of regular family activities in parent-child communications and encourages everyone to make family meals a regular feature of their lives.
Underage and high-risk drinking among the Sacramento area’s young people is significant and increasing. Nearly 30% of Sacramento County 7th graders reported using alcohol, higher than the state average of 25%.
Research conducted by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA*) at Columbia University has consistently found that the more often children eat with their families, the less likely they are to drink. Parental engagement is the single most potent weapon in preventing underage drinking among young people.
Family Day teaches the importance of frequent family meals and parental involvement in the lives of teens. That’s why local organizations like Project Help, Friday Night Live, Sacramento State University, People Reaching Out and the Sacramento County Alcohol and Drug Services Division are kicking off this campaign by encouraging everyone in Sacramento County to come to the table for a meal with their family.
So, we are asking for your help. Family Day is officially September 24th and your participation will assist us to continue those very necessary support programs which go such a long way in helping families start talking before they start drinking.
